Critical Lens on Politics

Television media are some of the prime sources of information voters have about presidential candidates, their portrayals can make or break a campaign. As upcoming elections approach, it is important for students to develop greater media literacy by understanding the elements that comprise an advertisement. Students will consider how they receive their political information and perceptions. By analyzing how political context influences the strategies employed by presidential candidates and the elements that make an ad effective, students can think of ways to counteract or better inform these influences.

Social Studies 8a: Analyze evidence in terms of historical and/or social context, content, authorship, point of view, purpose, and format; identify bias; explain the role of bias, context and audience in presenting arguments or evidence.
Social Studies 8c: Identify and compare multiple perspectives on a given historical experience.
Social Studies 8f: Identify and explain different types of political systems and ideologies used at various times in United States history and explain the roles of individuals and key groups in those political and social systems.
Visual Art Standard 3: Students will reflect upon, interpret, and evaluate works of art, using the language of art criticism. Students will analyze the visual characteristics of the natural and built environment and explain the social, cultural, psychological, and environmental dimensions of the visual arts. Students will compare the ways in which a variety of ideas, themes, and concepts are expressed through the visual arts with the ways they are expressed in other disciplines.
