Cultural Institutions:

 

NYSCulturalEd.org provides teachers with an interactive map of Cultural Institutions across New York State categorized by type and county. With the help of this section, teachers can find local Cultural Institutions, exhibits, and events that complement the Common Core curriculum of their classroom.

  • Visit NYSCulturalEd.org and click on the “Cultural Institutions” icon at the top of the page

  • Use the interactive map on the Cultural Institutions page to geographically see all the cultural institutions in New York State

  • Narrow your search by clicking on your county on the map

  • Narrow your search by choosing from one of the following categories on the sidebar: Archive, Library, Museum, Public Media, or Park/Zoo

  • Learn more about a cultural institution by reading its brief description, clicking on its URL, and viewing its related image

 

Open Educational Resources:

 

Cultural Institutions have also provided NYSCulturalEd.org with Open Educational Resources (OER), which are publicly available resources that teachers can use to relate classroom curricula to exhibits at local institutions. These OER will help to reinforce the concepts students learn from the Common Core.

  • Visit NYSCulturalEd.org and click on the “Open Educational Resources” icon at the top of the page

  • Browse through the Open Educational Resources (OER)

  • Narrow your search by choosing a subject area: (Arts, English Language Arts, Languages Other Than English (LOTE), Math, Science, Social Studies)

  • Narrow your search by choosing a Target Education Level: (Elementary, Intermediate, High School)

  • Explore the OERs by reading their descriptions and viewing their related images

  • Find out what Common Core Standards each OER adheres to in order to find ones that align with your goals in the classroom

 

 

Lesson Plans:

 

Cultural Institutions have also provided NYSCulturalEd.org with detailed lesson plans that you can use to connect content in your classroom with exhibits at local institutions.

  • Browse through the lesson plans on the Lesson Plan page

  • Narrow your search by choosing a subject area: (Arts, English Language Arts, Languages Other Than English (LOTE), Math, Science, Social Studies)

Beyond learning about local cultural institutions and their resources, you can use NYSCulturalEd.org to connect with other teachers, share knowledge, and ask questions.

  • Visit NYSCulturalEd.org and click on the “Social Collaboration” icon at the top of the page

  • Browse through the topic list of forums

  • Use the sidebar to choose a category of forums you would like to explore

  • Sign into a social network, such as Facebook or Twitter, to be able to post a new discussion topic under different forum categories, or comment on an existing one
