Guidance Document for Transgender and Gender Nonconforming Students Are Now Available for School Districts!

In case you haven’t heard, this past July New York State Education Commissioner, MaryEllen Elia, has made a significant stride in education. She has released a guidance document for public school districts to ensure students who identity as transgender or gender nonconforming are now protected under Title IX in order to create a safe educational environment for these groups.

“This new document gives administrators practical guidance to ensure their schools are places where transgender and gender nonconforming students can focus on academics, friendships, and their interests instead of worrying about how they will be treated by school staff and their peers” - State Commissioner Mary Ellen Elia.

To note some of the important information inside the document, it includes: definitions to help those school officials who are unaware of what it means to be transgender and/or gender nonconforming, the importance of asking a person for their prefered gender pronouns (when appropriate), and privacy and confidentiality of the students and allowing students to use whichever restroom they choose as well as establishing a gender neutral restroom in schools.
