The Importance of STEAM in Education

All across the country, educators are coming to the conclusion that art plays and important role in the development of a comprehensive curriculum. So much so, that many are moving towards the STEAM approach rather than just STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math). More and More people are realizing the importance of this movement and how integrated the subject areas are. 

At Andover Highschool in Massachusetts, students are learning geometry through the arts. Students attend local museums where they particpate in a scavenger hunt. Through this activity, students learn that perspective in art is the same concept as scale in geometry. In Annapolis, Maryland, middle school students are able to use Mozaics to predict the number of objects in graphs. Using alternative methods of learning through art portrays concepts in a different way to students who may be struggling in a traditional STEM environment. 

A study done by the Endowment for the Arts shows that students in low socio-economic status who are active in the arts tend to perform better that their peers who are not. The data shows the positive impact art can have on education.

The term STEAM was started by the Rhode Island School of Design. According to RISD the objectives of The STEAM movement are to "transform research policy to place art and design at the center of STEM” and “influence employers to hire artists and designers to drive innovation.” 

In New York, there is already some effort to integrate STEAM into our schools. The National Girl's Collaborative provides support and resources to a number of different groups throughout the state. They hope to bring awarness to the importance of art in everyday life, which includes education.
